Borne out of the Berlin of Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht, cabaret expressed the political and moral climate the composers inhabited. In other words, cabaret is urban folk music: storytelling with a fairly common/accessible theme. The smells of tobacco and booze have sunk into the clothes of cabaret, and you can hear broken glass under her feet as she trudges down her musical alleyway. The music ranges from silly to gritty but it’s all there for the fun of it. The women and the music of Yankee Panky will remind you of fine wine, ‘Over-ripeness, coupled with some tartness!’
